NAXOS FESTIVAL 2004
Sailing on the
ARCHIPELAGO
From Venetian Rule to the Struggle for Independence.
Exhibition from 17/07/2004 to 12/09/2004
Eight hundred years have passed since the maelstrom of the Fourth Crusade swept Constantinople, brought Venetian galleys to the Aegean and created the marine mosaic of the Duchy of the Archipelago.
This anniversary provides the occasion for a maritime approach to the modern history of the Cyclades, from the period of the Venetians through Ottoman rule and up to the War of Independence, guided by a valuable collection of historic artefacts that have travelled to Naxos from the Benaki Museum's, the Maritime Museum of Greece, the Numismatic Museum, the National History Museum, the Alpha Bank Art Collections Department, the Catholic Archdiocese of Naxos and Tinos, the Syros branch of the Lyceum of Greek Women and the Hellenic Naval Academy. Exhibition curator: Mario Vazeos
